POINT FORM SUMMARY

Fixing Problems

Interference

What is Interference?:
Interference While Learning:
  • When learn a task somewhat similar to one already know → interference
    • example: taskA = car (front steer) / taskB = forklift (rear steer)
          → A interferes with learning B & learning B interferes with A
  • When learning task very similar to one already know → A helps learning B
    • example: taskA = car (front steer) / taskB = bus (front steer)
          → A helps learning B<
  • When learning a task totally different to one already know → no effect on/from previous learning
Interference in Recall and Performance:
  • Occurs when two or more very similar tasks are being retrieved at the same time.

How Do I Avoid Interference?:
  • DO use a stick man with the same body and proportions and abilities as yourself.
    • when exploring ideas for your own style, think/pretend that the stick man is doing activity instead of yourself.
    • If like what stick man doing, then pretend yourself doing the same thing (rehearsal of movement into natural style)
  • DO NOT compare your own movements/style to someone else’s
    • because these 2 automatic styles will be in working memory at the same time → interference
    • (comparing other athletes’ styles will not interfere, because are visualizing their bodies doing activity, not your own)
  • DO NOT compare differences between 2 very similar tasks:
    • example trickskiing versus wakeboarding
      • differences stance on ski / pull-in to start trick / landing trick
      • similarities procedures (pulling → do trick → aim for and absorb landing)
    • example downhill skiing: normal ski style emphasizing control versus new ski style emphasizing lightness on feet
      • differences in how legs ride over bumps
      • similarities in upper body position
  • DO learn explicit control (retrieval cues) of differences between 2 very similar tasks:
    • example trickskiing versus wakeboarding: retrieval cues for stance, pull-in, landing
(because these are the main differences between trickskiing and wakeboarding)
    • example downhill skiing: retrieval cues for “control” and “light on feet” stances/feel

How Do I Get Rid of Interference?
  • Time out → interference fades, natural style has chance to come out
  • Developing retrieval cues for parts that work, ignore stuff that does not work
  • Regress via hypnosis: re-experience → develop retrieval cues
